How to obtain the residence permit for retired foreign national in France?

You can obtain the residence permit for retired foreign national in France under certain conditions, including having a different citizenship and being retired. Also, if your spouse has lived regularly with you in France, you can simultaneously request also the spouse’s residence permit.

What is the residence permit for retired foreign national?

The retirement card of a retiree or the retired spouse allows you to enter France at any time for a maximum of 1 year without a visa application.
You are not allowed to work while holding the residence permit for the retired.
After receiving your residence permit for retirees, if you wish to re-establish your habitual residence in France, you have the right to apply for a residence permit.

If you are a foreigner and meet all of the following conditions, you can obtain the residence permit:

  • You have resided in France with a resident card (resident card or EU long-term resident card or former 3-year ordinary resident card or 10-year preferred resident card),
  • You have established (or are in process of establishing) your habitual residence abroad,
  • Hold a retirement pension from a French basic social security scheme.

This residence permit does not allow you to bring your family to France. However, if your spouse regularly lives with you in France, you can obtain the spouse’s residence permit. With this card, your partner can enter France at any time without applying for a visa for a maximum of 1 year. This person is not allowed to change the country of residence.

How to apply for it?

You must submit your application to the prefecture or sub-prefecture of your domicile within 2 months preceding the expiry date of your long-stay visa that is serving as your residence permit.

Documents to provide:

  • Your passport,
  • Justification that you have established (or are in process of establishing) your habitual residence abroad,
  • Extract of registration proving your rights issued by the organization paying your pension or your last tax certificate (or a photocopy of one of these documents if you do not have an original),
  • Justification for your residence in France with a resident card,
  • passport photo,
  • Declaration of non-polygamy, if you are married, and you are a citizen of a country that allows it.

The price is 25 € per tax stamp. This card is valid for 10 years.
