How to apply for the first passport?

Who can apply for the first passport in the UK?

According to the official governmental website, for the first passport can apply people who:

  • are British nationals
  • are 16 (or will be in maximum 3 weeks) or older
  • have never had issued a UK passport before.

The adult passport is valid for 10 years. However, you don’t need to replace your child passport (if you have one) even if you have already turned 18.

What documents do you need?

To apply for the first passport in the UK you will need the following documents:

  • the full certificate that you were born or adopted in the UK
  • if applicable, your mother’s or father’s passport number, or full UK birth certificate, or other documents (if you were born on or after 1 January 1983)
  • if you were born outside of the UK, you will need both your registration or naturalisation certificate and the passport that allowed you to come to the UK.

  • a digital photo
  • prepared supporting documents
  • a credit or debit card (the price is £75.50)
  • someone who can confirm your identity.
