How long does it take to get a passport in South Africa?

Are you planning an international trip and need to get your passport sorted out? Wondering how long the passport application process takes in South Africa? In this article, we’ve got you covered with all the details on passport processing times, whether you’re applying for a new passport domestically or abroad, or submitting your application online.

Processing times for different types of passports in South Africa

The amount of time it takes to get your passport in South Africa depends on the type of passport you are applying for:

  • Tourist passports: Applications are typically processed within 10-15 working days.
  • Maxi tourist passports (48 pages): Processing usually takes 15-20 working days.
  • Official/diplomatic passports: Expect processing to be completed in 5-10 working days in most cases.
  • Emergency travel documents: These can often be issued the same day or within 1-2 working days when justified.

Keep in mind that during peak travel periods like the December holidays, processing times may be longer than usual due to high demand. Applying well in advance of your planned travel dates is advisable.

Passport processing times when applying abroad

South African citizens who are currently overseas can apply for a passport at their nearest South African embassy, consulate or mission. Processing times vary by location and type of passport, but are generally in the range of 10-20 working days once all required documents have been submitted. Check with your local South African consular services for specific timelines.

Some South African missions abroad offer the option of submitting passport applications online via the eHomeAffairs portal, which can help streamline the process. However, you’ll still need to make an appointment to visit the mission in person to complete your application.

Online passport application processing times

The Department of Home Affairs offers an online passport application system for South African citizens called eHomeAffairs. Through this portal, you can complete most of the passport application process digitally, including submitting your application form, making payments, and uploading supporting documents.

After completing the online application, you will need to schedule an appointment at your nearest Home Affairs office to finalize the process, have your biometrics captured, and submit any physical documents. Online applications are usually processed within 10 working days from the time of your in-person appointment.

When applying for your passport, the photo you submit is a crucial element. With Smartphone iD, you can quickly and easily take your passport photo from anywhere using just your phone!
