How to renew your driving license in South Africa

Is your South African driving license about to expire? In that case, it’s important to renew it before it expires, in order to avoid penalties and maintain your legal right to drive. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of renewing your driving license in South Africa, including when and where to renew, the documents you need, and how our app can help simplify the process.

When to renew your driving license

In South Africa, driving licenses are valid for five years from the date of issue. It’s important to renew your license before it expires. You can renew your license up to four weeks before the expiration date. If your license has already expired, there is a 21-day grace period during which you can still renew it, but you may face additional penalties.

Where to apply for a new driving license

To renew your driving license, you need to visit a Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC) in person. There are DLTCs located throughout South Africa. You can find the nearest one to you by visiting the official website of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) or by contacting your local municipality.

Can you renew your driving license online?

Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to renew your driving license online in South Africa. You must visit a DLTC in person to complete the renewal process. However, you can book an online appointment at some DLTCs to minimize your wait time.
