Let’s be honest. You won’t want to lose your passport card under any circumstance. Moreover, there is no need to make someone understand the need for passport cards. It is the key to your international travels, be it anywhere. If you have a passport card from your country, it also acts as proof of your citizenship and nationality. This was the basic idea about what passport cards are. And you now know how useful these are as well!

Now, the thing to keep in mind is that different countries have different rules when it comes to the restoration of a lost passport card. Let us take the example of Ireland. This country has its own set of rules in this matter. Are you Irish and have lost your passport card? Or maybe it was stolen? Don’t worry, we have got you covered. Read the article completely to know everything.

What happens if you have lost your passport card more than once?

There are certain things that you need to know about a lost Irish passport card. The consequences of losing it depends primarily on the number of times you have lost it. If you’ve lost it once, the restoration will be easy as you will get a replacement quite easily.

But if you’ve lost it twice or more, things will be different and so will be the consequences. Losing your Irish passport card more than twice can result in a decrease in the validity time of your next card. And you may not get another full 10-year valid passport card as well!

What to do?

If you’ve lost your Irish passport card, there are two cases – you’ve either lost it in the country itself, or it was lost abroad in some other country. Here are both the cases.

PASSPORT CARD LOST IN IRELAND

If you are an Irish citizen and have lost your passport card in your country, there are two things that you can do –

  1. Inform the Passport Office about the lost or stolen passport card;
  2. Report the matter to Garda Síochána, the National Police and Security Service of Ireland.

But how can you get a new passport card? Well, the ways are simple. You have to apply for a new one, and you can do it online through their official website, by post through their Passport Express post, or you can visit the Passport Office itself (in Dublin and Cork). If you need to travel abroad in an emergency but don’t have your passport, you can still contact the Passport Office through web chat and they will provide you with a temporary passport, provided the reason for your emergency visit is valid.

PASSPORT CARD LOST ABROAD

Now, this is more of a difficult situation. If you’ve lost your Irish passport card in some other country, the recovery process can be a bit stressful.

Regardless, here is what you’ve to do –

  1. The first thing you’ve to do is to report the lost or stolen case to a police station in the country. And you can ask them for a written statement about your report of the same. This will work as proof when you apply for a new one at the Passport Service, without which you won’t be given a replacement
  2. The next thing will be to contact the Irish Embassy or consulate. Once you do this, they will either provide you with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document to finish your trip. If there is no Irish Embassy or consulate, you may contact an Embassy or consulate of any other EU member state. They will provide you with an ETD (EU Emergency Travel Document)

But the best option would always be to keep a backup of your Passport Card. You can either have an image or an online document of the passport card, and it will be equally useful in the traveling stuff when you don’t have the original one.
