How To Renew A Passport Card?

You are eligible for an Irish passport card if you are an Irish citizen. If you are one and currently hold an Irish passport card, you should know that it has a validity of 10 years. Once expired, you can apply for your card’s renewal. If it gets stolen or damaged, or in case of a change of name, you can apply for its renewal.

Three ways to renew your Irish passport

You can renew your passport through:

Fees for passport card renewal

The standard 10-year and 34-page passport may cost between  €75 to €95, and the large 10-year and 66-page passport card may cost between €105 to €125. You can choose any of the three ways – online, post, or in-person to get your passport.

For the exact breakdown of fees, check the official website.

It may take up to 10 working days to process.

You can check the official site of Passport Service to know the latest turnaround times.

Renewing your passport through Passport Online

You can apply and track your renewal from anywhere in the world as long as the expiry of the passport is not more than 5 years. You just have to follow the step-by-step guideline shown on the website. You need not give proof of identity while applying for a new passport.

In case of any unprecedented emergency, like the sudden death of a family member, you can contact the Passport Services Customer Service Hub and can avail of the Rapid Renewal process.

You will have to upload a digital photograph of yourself in the application. It must be kept in mind that this photo can not be a “selfie” and should capture you from above the waist. We recommend using software such as Smartphone iD.

Renewing by post through Passport Express

If you are an Irish Citizen, you are required to fill out the form APS-1. The details of the form are available on the Passport Service’s Platform. If the current passport has more than 12 months of validity left, then you have to post it to the office.

There shall be 4 identical photos attached with the application. On the back of two of those, there must be the signature of 2 witnesses along with the form number shown in Section 9 of the application form. If the application is for Ireland then the witnesses must be a member of Garda Síochána.

If the application is for abroad, then the suitable categories of the witnesses are mentioned in the application form. The witnesses have to mention their functional contact number, as the same is to be verified by the Passport Service, embassy, or the concerned consulate.

Renewing your passport in-person

In-person applications are mainly for those who are in urgent need of a passport. You should book an appointment with the passport office in Dublin or Cork. If living abroad, you can apply for a passport in your nearest Irish embassy using form APS-2.

Additional Information

In case of a change of name (after marriage) in the passport, you need to submit two official documents to show that you have been using the name for the last 2 years.

You can apply for gender recognition to get your gender recognition certificate from the Department of Social Protection. If you are not eligible for it, then you have to submit documentary evidence that you have been using the name continually for 2 years, and have to sign a declaration that you intend to live by the new gender all your life.
