What is BRP?
Biometric residence permit (BRP) indicates your name and place, and date of birth. It serves to confirm your identity. It also includes biometric information (your fingerprints and a photo of your face), as well as the conditions of your stay are outlined.
How to give your photo and fingerprint information
A photo and fingerprints are required in acquiring a biometric residence permit for a visa or immigration application. You are allowed to cover your head for either religious or medical reasons.
Physically challenged individuals who cannot provide fingerprints will only be required to submit a digital photo. A guardian or parent is required to accompany children below the age of 16. Toddlers below the age of 5 years are not required to give out their fingerprint information.
Where can you give your photo and fingerprint information?
Where you give your biometric information depends on how whether your are in the UK or abroad.
If you’re applying from within the UK, you’ll usually go to one of the following:
- a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point
- a Service and Support Centre (SSC)
If you’re outside the UK, you’ll be asked to go to a visa application centre.
Other essential details about the UK Biometric residency permit
It costs £19.20 to give your biometric information (or reuse it if you’ve provided it before) if you apply from within the UK. The cost is included in your application fee if you apply from outside the UK.
If you applied from inside the UK, you will receive the BRP by courier. If you applied from outside the UK, collect your BRP once you’re in the UK. You must usually do this before the vignette sticker in your travel document expires or within 10 days of arriving in the UK. Choose the option that happens later.
